#1 Full Front View-
This display cabinet features a pair of doors, each with an intricate nymph and lyre design highlighted by a sunburst, above two drawers with three interior shelves. The door design was chosen for a musician friend and the walnut, acquired from the recipient's own property, was air-dried and dimensioned to size.
The cabinet's sides, top and bottom were joined with simple rabbets. Dadoes were let into the sides of the cabinet for the shelves. A veneer was cut and applied to the front cabinet edges to maintain continuity of grain and color. Holly stringing was placed around the perimeter of the cabinet. Runners for the drawers were added to the side and center. Rabbets on the cabinet back were made to accept 1/4” birch plywood fastened with brass screws.

#2 Close-up of Doors with intricate design-
The doors were made in two layers with overlapping joints to minimize warping and to create a recess in which to accept the poplar sunburst. Strips were cut on the saw and allowed to set a week to stabilize. The sunburst effect was created from the best strips. The nymphs were scroll sawn from walnut and applied to the front of each door.
Because the stiles and rails are made of a small amount of wood they are quite fragile. The addition of the nymph and sunburst reinforced the frames, creating a very light and sturdy door. 1/8" super magnets were hidden in the frames to keep the doors closed.

#3 Close-up with drawers open-
The drawers are very simple and are made of poplar joined with rabbets on the sides and bottoms. 1/4" thick pieces of walnut were applied to the drawer faces.  Dadoes were cut on each drawer side to function as guides for the runners. Small brass strips were applied to the inside backs of each drawer to serve as stops.

#4 Close-up with interior view of shelves
1/4" thick walnut shelves were let into the dadoes on the cabinet sides and a small moulding, fashioned from separate wood, was applied to the front top of the shelves to strengthen them and to create a lip to prevent treasures from sliding off.

#5 3/4 Side View
After being sanded with 220 grit paper, the entire cabinet was brushed with Watco Danish oil to bring out the grain and the color of the wood. The wet oil was rubbed with 600 grit wet/dry paper.  Shellac was then padded on. The addition of decorative pulls completed the project and the recipient was well pleased.

Judges Comments
AJH : Nicely designed, and it works especially well because if its small size. Your musician friend will love this cabinet ... he'll probably ask for another.
EW : The doors say it all about this piece. What a nice concept!
LG : Your scoll saw work makes this cabinet. I really like the light feel the poplar sunburst adds to the front. Nice job.
RJ : Lovely scroll work which along with the poplar 'sunburst' effect really is the making of this cabinet.
