Materials:   I built this cabinet for my wife for Christmas from a magazine photo that she gave me.  The photo showed only the lower half of the cabinet however I could easily scale it and design it to fit our tastes.  It is made of solid mahogany and even the knobs are turned from mahogany.  It has some stain that I mixed from red mahogany and special walnut and than an tung oil finish.  I am an amateur cabinet maker and enjoy building a couple of pieces each year.

Photo shows the medicine cabinet in a small bathroom corner and is a very useful accessory.

Judges Comments
AJH : Making furniture from a photograph can be a great experience: You have the visual as a guide, but you're not limited by anything the original maker did. The choices you made here work very well. I agree with Ellis that the low sheen fits this piece nicely.
EW : This is an attractive cabinet. The low luster finish makes it look like an antique.
LG : Nice overall proportion, Door would look better if panel grain ran vertically and rails and stiles were narrower.
RJ : An attractive copy of an old style with eye pleasing proportions. One design trick to think about in the future which can improve the appearance of framed structures is to make the bottom rail wider than other members-- there are exceptions but that's the general guideline. Here for example you'd use that principle to make the bottom rail of the door wider than the stiles and top rail, and many designers would make the top rail a little narrower again than the stiles. Try the exercise to scale on paper to see the effect.
