Dimensions (inches):
  Width:   24
  Height:   21 7/8
  Depth:   5 1/4
Materials:   Poplar, basswood and 1/4 in. plywood.  All of the poplar came from a log that I split by hand, cut on a bandsaw, and planed with a thickness planer.
This is a medicine cabinet for homeopathic remedies.  The doors are 12 1/8 in. wide and 21 7/8 in. tall.  I made the frames out of poplar using mortise and tenon.  The raised panel is basswood and is 17 7/8 in. tall and  8 1/8 in. wide.  I handcarved the panels using patterns that I made. All the poplar is stained with Minwax golden oak stain, with two coats of Minwax polyuerthane on everything.  This is the first cabinet that I've ever made.

The case is made out of 3/4 in. poplar.  I used blind dovetails on the corners of the case. The shelves are 1/4 in. poplar, 3 1/2  in. wide and and rest in dados cut at a ten degree angle.  I angled the shelves so that you can get to every bottle without having to move any and so that you can read the labels on the bottle caps.  The shelves are spaced 2 in. apart, with a larger section on the bottom for taller bottles.  The back is made from 1/4 in. plywood and is inset in a dado 1/2 in. from the back edge.  Note the finger groove that I routed in the doors.

Keeping with the medicine theme, all of the plants have medicinal properties.  On this door I carved primrose, iris, stinging nettle, marigold, dog rose and holly.  The grounding is 1/2 in. deep.

On this door I carved plantain, Christmas rose, yellow jasmine, and clematis.

Judges Comments
AJH : The carving is wonderful. Nice hint of curliness in the panels, too.
EW : Kudos for the concept and the carving. I would like to have seen a closer view of some of the carving work.
LG : I'm a sucker for carving, it looks very nice. When doors get narrower it's good to make the door frame members narrower as well. Your carving is beautiful and the whole cabinet front would benefit from the carving taking up more space in relation to the frame and the flat in the panel. You have this lushly textured space surrounded by flatness. Some texture in these flat places would help balance your design. Keep up the good work.
RJ : I do like the carving. Clean, crisp and relevant to the intended purpose of the cabinet.
