This cabinet was made to hang in the bathroom and enhance our nautical theme.

The main carcass of the cabinet is made from ¾ “ Maple plywood.  I dove tailed the corners of the carcass to give me an opportunity to play with a new toy but the dove tailing does not show.

The doorframe is tongue and groove. The frame is made from ¾” figured Maple and the center backing of the door is ¼” Birch plywood.

The sailing ship is modeled after a mid 1800’s Clipper-Ship. This was my first try at intarsia. The total time was around 100 hours. Most of the time was spent shaping the sails to look like they were full of wind.

At the bow where the two hull parts join, I inlayed a thin strip of Ebony to help give the joint depth and shape. The hull is made of Peruvian Walnut and I hand picked it for it’s colored strips to help give the appearance of a rounded shape.

The large flag in the back is made of Red heart and the stay is red oak. The seagulls are made from Cherry wood.

The cabinet was finished of with three coats of Minwax Polyurethane semi-gloss. As a note the camera makes the finish look glossier than it is.

Judges Comments
AJH : An excellent ensemble of wood species and artwork.
EW : You definitely have a feel for intarsia, and the overall combination of proportions and wood selection is wonderful. Nice job!
RJ : A fine choice of wood for the fronts which complements the beautifully graphic sailing theme. I can see you have put a lot of thought and time into this work.
