  Depth:   7 1/4
Materials:   Black Walnut, Lacewood, Curly Maple, ¼” Maple Plywood

I built this cabinet with our master bathroom in the new house in mind. It can be hung on the wall or sat on a table. The design started with a his and hers cabinet. I did not want two cabinets so I brought them together with the drawers and center shelf.

The cabinet doors and drawer fronts are rabbeted for the inset Lacewood panels.

The drawers are machine dovetailed walnut and maple with 1/4 Maple ply bottoms.

Biscuit joinery and cast iron look hinges were used to put the cabinet together. Hand scraped and sanded to 320 grit.

Finished with 5 coats of low-sheen tung oil and hand rubbed to a silky smooth look and feel. I was going to add some ebony pulls on the cabinet but it really did not look good. The panels on the drawer fronts stick out enough to grab. Total project time including design was just under 200 hours.

Judges Comments
AJH : Very competently constructed, and I like the red/brown mix. However, the angled direction of the grain in the walnut door frames -- especially the right hand door -- gives an optical illusion that the doors are slightly angled.
EW : As with all pieces, this one must live in the context of its surroundings, so I can't pass definitive judgement on the selection of woods or the design. The combination of red and brown woods is unusual, and the concept of bridging two cabinets gives me pause, but in the context of your bathroom, it could be the right design solution. I would have to see it installed.
