Dimensions (inches):
  Width:   16
  Height:   21
  Depth:   5
Materials:   Western Maple, Baltic Birch Plywood, Walnut, Poplar

My goal for this cabinet was to get some practice with
marquetry and create something fun and functional.
It was winter when I was building it, and the image of
cherry blossoms seemed especially appealing.  The
main body of the cabinet is made out of western maple,
and the door is veneered plywood.  The veneer is 1/8"
and home-made.

This cabinet was designed to
function as a bathroom vanity
for our home.  It is finished with
a 3-part oil.

The door is plywood with solid
wood edging, and 1/8" home-made
veneer over top, inside and out.  The
mirror is held in place by small leaves
which contain hidden rare-earth magnets,
allowing for easy removal for cleaning.  To
remove the mirror, you simply have
to pull the leaves out of their housings.

This is a close-up shot of the leaf mechanism that holds the mirror in place.

This is a close-up shot of the
hinges on the door.  They are
branches that wrap around the
cabinet and door.  The hinges are
made out of walnut and the leaves
are poplar.  They are pinned on with
1/8" brass rod.

RJ : A great learning experience for you. Interesting wooden hinging and attractively veneered door out of home made veneers. I think the veneers defining the branches would be better with the grain following the branch direction. You haven't quite succeeded in creating a balanced 'picture' but you've made a very good first attempt.
LG : Using the grain of the wood in marquetry is necessary for achieving a great look. Your branch should have the grain oriented the way the grain runs in a branch. The twigs that branch from the main stem should be joined and give the appearance of an actual tree branch. The composition of the marquetry needs better balance in the space. Filling space evenly and in a balanced way is often what carving and marquetry are all about. Keep up the practice and pay attention to designs and the way they treat the space they are meant to occupy.
EW : What a creative accomplishment this is! Custom veneer, wonderful marquetry, and your hinges and mirror stays are ingenious. Overall I'll bet you really had fun with this process.
AJH : A very nice effort enhanced by the use of cleverly constructed hinges and mirror mounts.
