This is a cabinet made as a gift for my wife in response to our chaotic spice storage problem. It was my first (and so far only) cabinet venture. Overall, it was quite fun to build and is nice to finally have some organization while cooking.
We wanted a clean, contemporary look but still desired the warmth and beauty of wood. I fell in love with the quilted Makore veneer and it's light shimmering qualities.

The cabinet holds 72 spices and was made to take up very little space on the wall of our tight apartment. It is a veneered, mitered carcass with a 13 ply back for holding the spices and hanging the piece on the wall.

Finding hardware was difficult. I just wasn't happy with the majority of available hardware for this particular piece. I wanted a non-traditional type of hinge and pull that would give it a chest type of feel. It took a little machining, but I found something with a satisfying result. I wanted to see the hardware, not try to hide it.

The spices rest on 144 aluminum rods. The use of metals and other materials in furniture is something I enjoy. The aluminum against the maple interior really adds to the contemporary feel that we wanted. It also seemed like a good way to save space, incorporate some alternative materials and experiment with different ways to hold the jars.
